Alongside our training and education efforts, GCSEI continues to address another major barrier to surgical care: access to the equipment and supplies needed to safely care for patients.
Over the past year, through the generosity of our partners and donors, we collected and shipped more than $100,000 in donated surgical equipment and supplies to Ghana. These included supplies for endoscopic, laparoscopic, and open surgery; surgical staplers and sutures; wound care supplies; anesthesia and airway equipment; biliary and pancreatic stents; and orthopedic equipment, including titanium implants.
A particularly important part of these donations has been ostomy and stoma-care supplies. In Ghana, where patients pay out of pocket for much of their healthcare, the ongoing cost of ostomy appliances can place a significant financial burden on patients and their families. For some patients, access to reliable stoma supplies can be the difference between returning to work and daily life or struggling with leakage, skin complications, social isolation, and repeated healthcare visits. Donations of ostomy pouches and related supplies therefore make an immediate and very tangible difference in patients' lives.
The supplies were shipped to the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, an important partner in coordinating distribution to hospitals and training centers where they are most needed. Recipient sites have included Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, and other surgical training centers and partner institutions across Ghana.
These donations do more than fill supply shelves. Access to something as basic as the right suture, stapler, endoscopic accessory, anesthesia supply, or ostomy appliance can determine what care can be offered and how safely patients can recover afterward. The supplies also strengthen our training programs by giving surgeons and trainees access to the tools they need to translate new skills into patient care.
We are incredibly grateful to the individuals, hospitals, industry partners, and organizations whose ongoing generosity makes these shipments possible. Every donated item represents something very real for a patient—an operation that can be performed, a complication that can be prevented, or the ability to recover and return to everyday life with dignity.
